Karangkamulyan, The Trace Kingdom of Galuh

Karangkamulyan was an archaeological and historical place located at Karangkamulyan Village, Cijeunjing, Ciamis, West Java, Indonesia. It was a relic from Galuh Kingdom era which was Hindu and Buddhist. It was marked by World Peace Gong as a symbol of this place and it has spread in various cities in Indonesia. The placement of this Gong at Karangkamulyan  was not without reason, but it was stated that Ciamis was a city formed of a kingdom, namely Galuh and Ciung Wanara Kingdom was well known Manarah. (600 M-13000 M). Galuh Kingdom was known as a kingdom that had many treasures by maintaining local wisdom. In fact, these values were maintained among  Galuh society.

The celebration of peace day was routinely held every year and it began by performing national parade to the location of the gong to which climax of  gong sounded by several customary stakeholder and cultural practitioners who were present.

The following contents were:

 A peace came from  Sundanese,   to be precise at Galuh.

The world peace gong was here because this was Sundanese land.

It could inspire future generations to keep a peace because  peace was a strengthen.

A place where Galuh kingdom was born as a beginning, that was a new life passed down from generation to the next then and Ciamis was currently a district right now.  From this story, I took a lesson that time became the most important collected  moment when the prehistoric changed into a city under the leadership of a regent,  it was not easy when Galuh kingdom changed to Ciamis after the collapse of  Sundanese kingdom in 1579 due to the attack of Maulana Yusuf from Banten and the kings of Sumedanglarang until Galuh was under VOC rule which was initiated by an agreement between Mataram and the VOC on 19-20 October 1677.

Mataram had a vision to  hand over East Priangan as a service that helped the struggle for power in Mataram. Although, the plan did not take place quickly because Galuh Kingdom continued to maintain his existence until it passed the period under Dutch East Indies rule. The first regent of Galuh, R Adipati Surapraja came from Limbangan reigned in 1806-1811 and then he had not a long chance of leadership because Sunda land were divided into two part and Cirebon resident was deemed unsuitable when at the beginning of the Daendels administration. This division was depended on areas that had the potential to cultivate a coffee. The first section included Batavia, Tangerang, Karawang, Bogor, Cianjur, Bandung, Sumedang and Parakanmuncang. These areas had the potential to cultivate coffee from the areas which included  Cirebon and Cirebon-Priangan.


Karangkamulyan was a meeting point for various heritage sites of King Galuh including Batu Pangcalikan , Panyabungan ayam, Sanghiyang Bedil, Simbol peribadatan (Symbol of worship), Cikahuripan, and Panyandaan. By writing this story, I would tell randomly because the history was very difficult to be understood on a sustainable basie. Therefore, there was a discipline of knowledge. Only people who lived in ancient times understood a history even they did not know anything.

I  was guided by a final year student from Historical Department Faculty of Galuh University through a large forest as trace of Galuh Kingdom. A kingdom whore terroterity located between Citarum river to the west and Cipamali river to the east.  We were very careful to kept and ethics towards God and the universe. Because, visited a historical place was the same as visiting an earlier life.

  1. Batu Pangcalikan

Batu Pangcalikan was believed as the throne of King Galuh which was in the form of an altar and surrounded by a pile of stones forming a fence. The area was about 25 square meters as a meeting place or deliberation.

2.  Tomb of Adipati Panaekan

The tomb of Adipati Panaekan was a punden arranged in a circle with two upright stones on the north and south. The two upright stones were addition and it was assumed to be the tomb of Adipati Panaekan, a descendant of King Galuh.  Adipati Panaekan or Raden Ujang Ngoko was the Regent of Ciamis,  first  period of Galuh 1618-1625 M. The murder of Duke Panaekan in 1625 and his body was washed into the Cimuntur river. He was found by ta society was  buried at Karangkamulyan and his government was replaced by his son, Ujang Purba or Dipati Imbanagara. (1625-1636).

3. Panyabungan Ayam

Panyabung Ayam was a plateau with flat stones and menhirs. Seeing this cockfighting place, Sundanese people would remember the figure of Ciung Wanara. This legend was related to the Galuh kingdom which told of King Galuh who had the title Prabu Adimulya Sanghyang Cipta Permana Di Kusumah with two empresses, namely Dewi Naganingrum and Dewi Pangreyep. When Dewi Naganingrum gave birth to a son, Dewi Pangreyep immediately asked paman Lengser to dispose of the goddess Naganingrum’s son to Citanduy river. Then the boy was replaced by Dewi Pangreyep with a puppy, so the King got angry and drove Dewi Naganingrum away.

In the boat, the baby was provided with two chicken eggs which found by Aki Balangantrang. The eggs hatch and breed into fighting hens and it was said that this hens managed to beat the hens belonging to King Bondan Sarati, the son of Dewi Pangreyep. Finally, the kingdom of Galuh was recaptured by King Manarah who had the title Ciung Wanara.


So many things have stolen my attention at Galuh Purba heritage and nothing was forgotten including the old tree  that has been around for hundreds of years without roots.  A tree has grown from the 7th century and remaint durable. People came to exchange their luck. They said, anyone would be lucky if they could walk with his closed eyes to touch the hole in the tree trunk. If someone was still single, they would immediately meet his soul mate

We have traveled quite a long way by walking in a 25 hectare forest. My giude finally gave the option to stop by at Cai Kahuripan at the same time heading home. Cikahuripan  was a combination of two different words that was namely Ci = Cai which meant water and Hurip-an = Kahirupan which meant life. Cikahirupan was the water of life in the ancient Galuh era, it still existed and used by the society as a blessed water.

When I arrived at Cikahuripan place, my friends and I walked towards the direction of turning back. The distance was the same as when my friend and I entered the forest. It was still far away of existing while I was being horrible when Toni told the history of the formation of Karangkamulyan. The existence was fought by many heroes and they seemed to be alive today. I felt a weird hearing the history when explored the forest.

I managed to get out of the forest and  fear eventually.  There was still a place I wanted to visit, namely a museum of items used during the royal period. We needed to ask permission to enter the museum and comply with the rules to made our comfortable.

Understanding history has never reached my brain, not even the others. Therefore, there was a scientific discipline and those who learnt history were apparently to keep the time. However, we believed that Indonesia was a great nation with the discovery of many prehistoric relics. Someone told me  that before occupied a place, it would be better if we know the history firts. .
